On March 1, 2007, a tornado hit Enterprise Al. The Barbour County NAACP Disaster Response Team, Rev. Allen Forte, Annette Wellborn, Alvin Forte, Larry Smith, and William Tarver dispatched to Enterprise as part of the NAACP Alabama State Conference Emergency Response Team on March 2nd and 3rd. Enterprise looked like a war zone! The tornado destroyed homes; uprooted trees and so many people lost everything they had.
Barbour County NAACP was 2nd on the scene, along with Houston, Geneva and Coffee county NAACP. Mr. Ed Vaughn, the state president was also there. We set up a command post on Baptist Hill, across the street from St. Beulah Baptist Church. We gave out food, water, shoes, clothing, am fm radio and TV’s. We went door to door to those who still had homes and gave tarp coverings to those who needed it. The Emergency Response Team along with the Enterprise Coffee County City Branch continues to operate the NAACP Emergency Distribution Center at Pleasure Shade Baptist Church. |
